What is Purging?

What is Purging?
It is pronounced as Pörcing. Purging means to be purified, to be cleaned, to be purified. It means that a product with active ingredients applied to the skin for the first time brings everything under the skin to the surface. In particular, actives that trigger skin cell production by exfoliating the skin surface can bring everything that is closed under the skin (including acne) to the surface, since they provide rapid regeneration of the skin. This is called purging.

Even the spots on the skin may start to appear darker in the first use of products with some special active ingredients. This is just like purging, when the dead cells on the skin surface start to go away, the new cells that replace them are lighter and more vibrant, so the spots may appear as if they have become darker. As the use of the product continues, the spots begin to gradually open just like the skin tone.

Which products cause purging?

The ingredients with the most effective and fastest skin renewal feature can cause purging.

Vitamin C

Glycolic Acid

Salicylic Acid

It may take 4 to 6 weeks for the skin to completely clean itself and all of the structures under the skin to be finished. In this process, it is recommended to continue using the product until the purging is completely finished.

If you observe that the skin does not improve and gets worse after 6 weeks, it is recommended to stop using the product and consult a doctor or dermatologist. After that, a protocol recommended by the doctor should be applied.

Reaction or purging?

If the skin is sensitive and allergic to some ingredients in the formulation, then the skin may react negatively. They are very different things with purging.

Before starting a new product or introducing a new active to the skin, it is always recommended to perform a patch test to check whether the skin will react negatively. A small amount of product should be applied to the inner part of the arm and waited for 24/48 hours and it should be checked whether any negative reaction will occur. If a negative reaction does not occur, the product can also be used on the face.

Is it possible to reduce purging?

It is recommended to use the product in a controlled manner. It should be started with once or twice a week and the skin should be gradually accustomed to the product and active molecules. The frequency of use can be increased as the tolerance of the skin increases.
