pH is the chemical term that helps determine whether an aqueous solution is an acid or a base. The H in the pH term indicates the concentration of the [H] ion in the aqueous solution. The pH scale ranges from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most basic). Pure water has a pH of 7 and is considered neutral. As an example, below are the pH values of some products that we use frequently and daily:
pH 0: Acid cells and batteries
pH 2.5: Coca Cola
pH 3.3: Redbull
pH 6.5 : Milk
pH 7: Pure water
pH 8.2: Drop water, Aroma Water, Evian water
pH 10: Bar soap
pH 13.5: Bleach and bleach
pH 14: Sink angle
So what is the pH of our body?
If you think that our body pH is neutral, you are wrong. The expression neutral pH has no meaning for our body because our body does not have a single pH value. Body pH should be looked at by region. For example, the pH value of the blood is in the range of 7.34-7.45, the pH of the stomach is in the range of 1.5-3.5. While the pH range of the mouth is 6.3 - 6.6, the urine pH is 6.
Our skin also has a pH value. If we evaluate in general, the pH of the skin is in the range of 4.5-5.5, that is, it has a slightly acidic value.
To make it a little more specific, women's skin is more acidic than men's. Our hands are more acidic than other parts of our body. Dark skin is more acidic than fair skin… What conclusion can we draw from this? Acidic products with pH below 7 are not bad for our skin.
Our skin is naturally acidic and it must remain acidic in order for the skin to continue its functions in a healthy way. When we wash our skin with a soap with a pH of 10-11, the pH of the skin also rises to this value. This is very damaging to the skin, causing irritation, inflammation and dryness. The skin barrier is damaged.
Daily regular exfoliation is very important for the skin to maintain its natural pH balance and maintain its healthy functions. Exfoliants are vital for maintaining the pH balance of the skin. The ideal pH range for exfoliants is 3.2-4. They can be included in the daily and weekly skin care routine.
